The team consists of 5 interns who are supported by an experienced team of senior vets, and each rotate to cover medicine cases within the hospital, surgical & lameness cases and night duties. During the medical rotation there is an emphasis on providing excellent care to all the in-patients including neonatal, post-op, wound and medical management cases. Interns work closely with the surgeons and anaesthetists during theatre week, become proficient and competent performing anaesthesia and are also required to scrub in on selected cases. The caseload varies from routine elective surgeries to emergencies. Lameness rotations see interns work with the orthopaedic vets to assist with the initial assessment, determine which diagnostics are appropriate and learn how to interpret those images and chose the correct treatment options. They will become competent performing ‘nerve’ and ‘joint’ blocks, radiography and ultrasound. During this rotation there will also be the opportunity to be involved with bone scan and MRI.
